    Hydroxychloroquine causing neuropathy

All my issues were resolved over a years time on low doses. I believe my problems started with side effects of a statin, which I stopped taking during my Plaquenil treatment but resumed after symptoms were resolved.

Antimalarials are used in the treatment of dermatologic, rheumatic, and connective tissue diseases.1Chloroquine CQ toxicity is known to cause vacuolar myopathy and curvilinear body formation.2Hydroxychloroquine HCQ neuromyotoxicity is a rare complication characterized by proximal muscle weakness. Hydroxychloroquine is used in the treatment of various rheumatic conditions including systemic lupus erythematous. Hydroxychloroquine induced myopathy is rare adverse reaction but symptoms are usually recover after discontinuation of the drug. Here we report a case of woman with systemic lupus erythematosus who presented with myopathy after eight months treatment with hydroxychloroquine. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets contain 200 mg hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg administration. Has anyone had neurological issues resolved with a Plaquenil treatment? I used Plaquenil years ago for extreme muscle and joint issues and it seemed to work fine. Years later I am now having small fiber issues in my hands which I think were triggered by side effect of statins and am looking for solutions.

Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. Muscle biopsy consistently reveals curvilinear bodies and muscle fiber atrophy with vacuolar changes. Most cases manifest as insidious onset proximal myopathy that may be associated with peripheral neuropathy and cardiac myotoxicity. Resolution of symptoms is slow after discontinuation of therapy and may be incomplete. A patient with psoriatic arthritis developed a peripheral neuropathy while taking hydroxychloroquine and naproxen. Although it was initially suspected that hydroxychloroquine was responsible for the neuropathy, subsequent rechallenge with naproxen demonstrated that clinical and electrophysiologic findings were related to routine pharmacologic doses of naproxen.
