Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Atovaquone treatment failures, due to decreased absorption and inadequate serum levels, have occurred when patients take the drug on an empty stomach. If the patient cannot take atovaquone with meals, it is suggested that alternate treatment be initiated if possible. Babesia organisms are malaria-like protozoans that parasitize and reproduce within mammalian red blood cells that’s why they are sometimes seen in a blood smear. xxx The ring-like forms of Babesia are sometimes mistakenly confused with another parasite called “Plasmodium falciparum” so make sure trained staff is reading your smear.

In the US and other places of the world still some consider Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) for treating malaria and the herb “Artemisin” or Artemisinin is the new way to treat – not very well accepted in my home country because the results are not as expected; they really deal with this disease every day and have been treating it successfully for so many years- but again that is another discussion, point here is Babesia. Babesia is a very deteriorating condition and affects humans all over the US. If not treated the malaria goes to the brain and then kills, but I’ve seen people recovering in a week after their brains were already infected.

  3. Plaquenil is a weaker antimalarial for babesia compared to mepron, malarone and coartem. usually you don't see an LLMD prescribe it for babesia but for its more well known benefits being an anti-inflammatory and drying out bacteria allowing the abx's/herbs you're taking to better penetrate and be more effective.

I have to say that the best I feel is on Plaquenil and doxycycline, with steroids occasionally. I have a flare. I wish that I could find one Dr that would treat me the same as a doctor in Gainesville Florida treated me. so that I could continue to feel better. Plaquenil alone does at first give you night terrors and insomnia. I think I was put on plaquenil for both pain and babesia. Gotta love those multi-purpose drugs Now that the babs is supposedly gone, I'm still on it to keep the inflammation down. I've also heard that plaquenil can help the antibiotics penetrate better. So, watch out cause that could mean stronger herxes. By Daniel J. Cameron, MD, MPH Although Lyme disease is the most talked about tick-transmitted disease, Babesia is more common than you might think. In the 2015 issue of Trends in Parasitology, Diuk-Wasser and colleagues report that up to 40% of patients with Lyme disease experienced concurrent Babesiosis. 1 This means that out of the

Medicinal Chemistry of Antimalarial Drugs The following article looks at the medicinal chemistry of antimalarial drugs. It will look at – in detail – quinine and quinine-related drugs. In a previous article, we briefly described malaria and artemisinin as a lead compound for new antimalarials. We now turn our attention to the other antimalarial drugs.
